Tanner Iskra was born and raised in the city of Aberdeen, which is located in Grays Harbor County, Washington. In Grays Harbor County, he attended and graduated from high school.

The veteran who went on to become a filmmaker graduated the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University earning his bachelor’s degree. The school name was chosen to pay tribute to Walter Cronkite, an esteemed journalist.

In addition, he received his education at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. At Syracuse University’s communications and journalism department, he completed the requirements necessary to receive his accreditation in military motion media. The broadcast journalism programs at the Newhouse School of Public Communications are well-known.

Iskra has also received certification from the Defense Information School in video production and documentation, visual information management, and intermediate videography. The need that exists within the Department of Defense for broadcasters and journalists who have been trained to a professional level is met by the Defense Information School.
